A father died Sunday night after running back into his burning Hollywood home to find his 10-year-old child. The child had already escaped safely.

What happened: Firefighters were called to the 22800 block of Thornbury Drive about 9:40 p.m. Sunday. They arrived to find a two-story home with heavy fire throughout. After putting out the fire, they found the father dead on the second floor.

What started the fire: According to the state fire marshal, the family used sparkler fireworks earlier that evening. When they were done, they threw the used sparklers into a trash can on a screened-in back deck. Investigators are looking at whether the sparklers were still hot enough to set the trash can’s contents on fire.

What’s still unknown: The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will make the official identification of the victim and determine the cause and manner of death. The investigation is ongoing.

Fireworks safety: Used sparklers and fireworks can stay hot enough to start a fire long after they appear to be out. The State Fire Marshal’s office says spent fireworks should be soaked in water and then placed in a metal container outside to cool completely before being thrown away.

“Our hearts are with this family as they face an unimaginable loss,” Acting State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray said. “Fireworks don’t stop posing a risk when the show is over. Taking a few extra minutes to soak and properly dispose of used fireworks and sparklers can help prevent a tragedy like this.”
