Most of Maryland is under an Extreme Heat Warning today, with heat index values expected to reach as high as 115 degrees in parts of the state.
What’s Happening: Two Extreme Heat Warnings and a Heat Advisory cover Maryland from the Western Shore to the Eastern Shore. Both warnings expire between 8 and 9 p.m. tonight.
What’s Confirmed: The most severe warning covers the largest portion of the state. Affected Maryland counties include:
- Frederick, Carroll, Baltimore, Cecil, Harford, Howard, Anne Arundel, Prince George’s, Charles, St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Montgomery counties
- Washington, D.C., and parts of northern Virginia are also included
Heat index values in those areas are expected to reach 110 to 115 degrees. A second Extreme Heat Warning covers Washington County, where heat index values could hit 105 to 109. A Heat Advisory covers central and eastern Allegany County, with heat index values up to 104.
What’s Important: Heat index values of 95 to 100 are possible again Sunday afternoon across all affected areas.
How This Affects Real People: Do not leave children or pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures within minutes. Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, avoid direct sun, and check on neighbors and relatives. Limit strenuous outdoor activity to early morning or evening hours.
