Nine people were hurt when a boat exploded at Schaefer’s Canal House in Chesapeake City Saturday afternoon, sending four to hospitals by helicopter.

What’s Happening: The explosion was reported at about 4:20 p.m. Volunteer Fire Company #1 of Chesapeake City, Cecil County Paramedics, and several other fire and emergency units responded to the scene.

What We Know: Seven of the injured were on the boat at the time of the explosion. Two others were hurt on a nearby dock. Four of the nine were flown to hospitals — two by Maryland State Police Aviation Command and two by Christiana Care Health Net. The remaining five were taken by ground ambulance to local facilities.

What’s Still Unknown: The cause of the explosion has not been determined. The severity of the injuries has not been released.

Deputy State Fire Marshals are actively investigating. Updates are expected as the investigation continues.
