It was, to put it mildly, a full week in Calvert County.
Between April 27 and May 3, Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 1,932 calls for service, according to the sheriff’s office. That works out to more than 275 calls a day — or roughly one call every five minutes, around the clock, for seven straight days. Among those calls: a bomb threat at a waterfront resort, a driver found slumped in the road with cocaine in the car, a suspected gunshot that shattered a vehicle window, and a fistfight at a family-friendly boardwalk event.
Bomb Threat at the Rod ‘N’ Reel
The week’s most dramatic call came May 1, when Corporal Buck responded to the Rod “N” Reel Resort at 4160 Mears Ave. in Chesapeake Beach after someone reported a bomb threat, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies evacuated the entire resort and conducted a safety sweep with K9 units. They found nothing. The case remains under investigation — which means someone called in a bomb threat to a beloved bayside resort and, so far, has not been identified.
Slumped, Stopped, and Charged
Early May 2, at about 1:23 a.m., Deputy Angell responded to the area of Arthur King Road and Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick after a report of a driver slumped over the wheel of a vehicle stopped in the roadway, according to the sheriff’s office. The driver, Barry Jeremiah Parran, 58, of Prince Frederick, was reportedly nodding off and smelled strongly of alcohol. Parran told deputies he had consumed a significant amount of alcohol, according to the sheriff’s office.
That was not the end of Parran’s evening. A search of the vehicle turned up a clear bag containing a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine, according to the sheriff’s office. Parran was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of paraphernalia, driving while impaired, and several traffic-related charges.
A Window With a Story
April 30 brought a puzzling call to the 1700 block of Prosper Lane in Owings. A driver told Deputy Snyder his vehicle had been struck by what he believed was a gunshot while he was driving east near the intersection of Mt. Harmony Road and Mt. Harmony Lane, according to the sheriff’s office. The driver said he heard an object strike the vehicle and felt a shockwave. The vehicle’s window was shattered. The sheriff’s office estimated the damage at $300. No suspect has been identified.
Jailhouse Renovation, Uninvited
Also April 30 — apparently a busy Thursday — correctional staff at the Calvert County Detention Center reported that inmate Jacob Fuller Wilson, 27, of Deale, had ripped a telephone from the wall of his cell, according to the sheriff’s office. Wilson was charged with malicious destruction of property. The estimated cost of the damage: $600.
Meanwhile, in Lusby, an unknown suspect tried to break into a vehicle on the 700 block of War Bonnet Trail sometime between 9 p.m. April 30 and 6 a.m. May 1, damaging the door handle’s locking mechanism, according to the sheriff’s office. That repair will run the owner an estimated $1,500.
First Friday Fight Night
North Beach’s First Friday boardwalk event drew a crowd May 1 — including two young girls who apparently decided the evening called for a physical altercation. Deputies patrolling the event observed the fight and intervened, according to the sheriff’s office. Both girls were charged with disorderly conduct and second-degree assault.
Seven DUIs in Seven Days
The sheriff’s office also reported seven driving while impaired arrests for the week. They were: Jetta K. Tolbert, 37, of Chesapeake Beach, April 27; Donald Vivar, 30, of Riverdale, April 29; Kishan D. Patel, 24, of Lexington Park, April 30; Isaiah W. Green, 22, of Prince Frederick, May 1; Brad L. Darmstead, 31, of Huntingtown, May 2; Parran, May 2; and Jacqueline M. Montague, 47, of Lusby, May 2.
Three of the seven arrests came on the same day.
