A cat in Waldorf has tested positive for rabies, the Charles County Department of Health announced Thursday.

What’s happening: The infected cat was found in the area of Dartmouth Road. Anyone who had contact with an unknown cat from that location should call the Charles County Department of Health at (301) 609-6768.

Free vaccines available: The county is offering free drive-through rabies clinics for dogs, cats, and ferrets at two upcoming dates:

  • Sunday, May 17, 10 a.m. to noon.
  • Sunday, June 7, 10 a.m. to noon.

Both clinics will be held at 10425 Audie Lane in La Plata. Bring your pet’s previous rabies certificate to qualify for a three-year vaccine. Call (301) 609-3425 or (301) 609-6751 with questions.

Where else to get vaccinated: Vaccines are also available through private veterinarians and at Petco, Banfield, and Tractor Supply locations.

What to know about rabies: Rabies is a fatal viral disease that spreads through the saliva of infected animals, typically through a bite. It can infect any mammal, including pets and humans. Maryland law requires dogs, cats, and ferrets to be vaccinated against rabies.
