A woman was shot by Anne Arundel County police after carjacking a vehicle, ramming officers and patrol cars, and crashing into a civilian vehicle in Severn, according to the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

The sequence of events began May 7 at about 9:10 p.m., when Northern District officers responded to the area of North Crain Highway and 11th Avenue in Glen Burnie for a report of a hit-and-run crash.

Officers learned the woman had crashed her vehicle into another car and then forcibly took a vehicle belonging to a family member who had come to the scene to help her.

What happened next

Western District officers later found the stolen vehicle in the 8500 block of Pioneer Drive in Severn, with the woman still inside. She drove toward the officers, striking one officer, two patrol vehicles, and a civilian vehicle.

Officers fired their weapons, striking the woman as she drove toward them. She then fled in the same vehicle.

Additional officers responding to the area saw the woman turn from Pioneer Drive onto Reece Road, where she crashed into another civilian vehicle near the intersection of Reece Road and Telegraph Road.

The woman got out of the vehicle and tried to get into another occupied car when detectives arrested her.

Injuries and treatment

Fire personnel and officers treated the woman at the scene. She was taken to a trauma center with a gunshot wound described as non-life-threatening.

The officer who was struck by the vehicle was taken to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury and has since been released.

What comes next

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division took over the investigation at the scene. Charges are pending against the woman. The officers involved will be placed on administrative leave while the Office of Professional Standards reviews the shooting, which is standard procedure following a police shooting in Anne Arundel County.
