A 27-year-old man died at a state prison in Hagerstown Monday afternoon, and investigators believe his cellmate was in the cell when it happened.
What’s Happening: Kelvin Hite, an inmate at Roxbury Correctional Institution, was found unresponsive in his cell shortly before 2 p.m. Monday. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
What We Know: Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators were called in by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services’ internal investigators. A fellow inmate has been identified as a suspect. Police have not released his name, saying they will not do so until charges are filed.
What’s Still Unknown: The cause and manner of death have not been determined. Hite’s body was sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
What’s Next: State Police crime scene technicians and the department’s internal investigators are assisting with the ongoing investigation. When complete, the case will go to the Washington County State’s Attorney’s office for review on potential charges.
