Central and Eastern Allegany County are under an Extreme Heat Warning through 8 p.m. Friday, with heat index values expected to reach between 105 and 110 degrees.

What’s happening: The National Weather Service issued the warning for the region as dangerously hot and humid conditions settle over western Maryland. A Heat Advisory takes effect Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., when heat index values of 100 to 104 are expected.

Why there’s little relief: Overnight low temperatures are staying near 70 degrees with high humidity, meaning residents will get little to no cooling break before Saturday’s heat returns.

What to know: Health officials warn that heat-related illness rises sharply during events like this. Residents are urged to:

  • Stay in air-conditioned spaces and drink plenty of fluids.
  • Avoid leaving children or pets in unattended vehicles, where interior temperatures can become lethal within minutes.
  • Limit strenuous outdoor activity to early morning or evening hours.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing if going outside.
  • Check on neighbors and relatives, especially older adults.

The bigger risk: Prolonged extreme heat can strain power, water, and transportation systems.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, and nausea. Heat stroke, which is a medical emergency, can cause confusion, loss of consciousness, and a body temperature above 103 degrees.
