Most of Maryland is under an air quality alert Thursday, with state officials warning that pollution levels could become unhealthy for children, the elderly, and people with breathing or heart conditions.

What’s happening: The Maryland Department of the Environment issued Code Orange air quality alerts covering large portions of the state. The alerts expire at midnight Thursday night.

Areas covered:

  • Prince George’s County, central and southeast Montgomery County, and central and southeast Howard County.
  • Southern Baltimore and Anne Arundel County.
  • Cecil County and southeast Harford County.
  • Charles, St. Mary’s, and Calvert counties.
  • Talbot and Caroline counties.

What Code Orange means: At Code Orange, pollution concentrations may reach levels that are unhealthy for sensitive groups. People who are not in a sensitive group are generally not affected at this level.

How this affects real people: Children, the elderly, and anyone with asthma, heart disease, or other lung conditions should avoid strenuous outdoor activity Thursday. The alerts cover the Baltimore and Washington suburbs, Southern Maryland, the upper Chesapeake region, and parts of the Eastern Shore.
