Preliminary data released Monday by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration shows 39 people died in motor vehicle crashes across Maryland in September. That was 15 fewer deaths than in September 2025.

What’s Happening: Those killed included 15 drivers, three passengers, 13 pedestrians, three bicyclists and five motorcyclists.

What’s Important: Maryland recorded 328 crash deaths from January through September, down from 369 during the same period in 2025. The data are preliminary and may change.

Safe driving steps: State officials offered these reminders as fall brings shorter daylight:

  • Watch for children and share the road with pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists.
  • Look twice before turning or changing lanes because motorcycles can be hard to see in blind spots.
  • Follow speed limits and slow down in work zones.
  • Avoid phones, impaired driving, aggressive driving and other distractions.
  • Wear a seat belt in the front or back seat.
  • Keep vehicles in good condition and carry an emergency kit. If a tire goes flat, pull off the road when possible, turn on hazard lights and call for help if needed.

The goal: Maryland’s roadway safety goal is zero deaths. More information is available at ZeroDeathsMD.gov and through @ZeroDeathsMD on Facebook, X and Instagram.
