Residents in parts of St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Dorchester counties will hear nuclear plant emergency sirens sound at noon Monday, June 1, 2026. The noise is a scheduled test, not an emergency.

What’s Happening: The St. Mary’s County Department of Emergency Services announced a full-cycle test of the alert and notification sirens surrounding the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. All sirens within 10 miles of the plant will activate for three minutes.

What’s Important: The test covers three counties because the 10-mile notification zone around Calvert Cliffs extends across St. Mary’s, Calvert, and Dorchester counties. Nuclear power plants are required to maintain emergency siren systems that can alert nearby residents in the event of an incident at the facility.

How This Affects Real People: Residents who hear sirens at noon June 1 do not need to take any action. If sirens sound at any other time, residents should tune in to local radio stations for official information and instructions.
