Three men died when a small plane crashed into a wooded area near a Bowie neighborhood late Saturday night, Maryland State Police said.

What’s Happening: A single-engine Piper Cherokee carrying a pilot and two passengers went down in a wooded area off Scarlett Oak Court in Bowie at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. All three men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Who Died: Maryland State Police identified the victims Monday:

  • Yoav Bomrind, 26, of Israel, the pilot.
  • David Rabinovich, 19, of Israel, a passenger.
  • Elad Naidik, 20, of Canada, a passenger.

What’s Important: The plane was traveling from Ocean City, New Jersey to the Montgomery County Air Park when it went down. Investigators believe the aircraft belonged to a local flight school in Montgomery County and may have been on a training flight.

How This Affects Real People: The crash site is close to a residential area. No one on the ground was injured.

The Search: Authorities found the wreckage at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday after a search that lasted several hours. The search began after an iPhone crash alert came in to Prince George’s County Public Safety Communications at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, reporting a crash near the intersection of Route 50 and Route 301.

The search involved the Prince George’s County Fire Department, Maryland State Police, the Anne Arundel County Police Department, the Prince George’s County Police Department, and the Bowie City Police Department.

What’s Next: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
