A 16-year-old boy went missing in the Potomac River near Sandy Landing and Great Falls Park Thursday morning after entering the water with a group of friends and failing to resurface.

What’s Happening: Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service and the Fairfax County Swift Water Team launched a search at about 6:15 a.m. After six hours in the water with no sign of the teen, crews returned to the river as the day wore on to keep looking.

What’s Important: Rescuers have brought in a U.S. Park Police helicopter, search-and-rescue dogs, aerial and underwater drones, and sonar equipment. The search is unfolding during a severe heatwave, with heat index values in the triple digits.

Catch Up Quick: Less than three weeks ago, 20-year-old Towson University student Nazir Bell went missing while swimming near the same stretch of river. His body was recovered two days later.
