A man wanted in a deadly hit-and-run in Gaithersburg was arrested at Newark International Airport while trying to board a flight to Honduras, police said.

What’s Happening: Josue David Carranza Castellon, 26, who has no fixed address, was taken into custody Thursday, June 18, before he could leave the country. He faces charges of manslaughter by vehicle and failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in death.

What’s Important: Brian Roy Longaberger, 56, died at the scene after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Muddy Branch Road and West Diamond Avenue in Gaithersburg at about 4:47 a.m. Wednesday, June 17.

What We Know: According to Montgomery County police, Carranza Castellon was driving a gray 2011 Honda CR-V northbound on Muddy Branch Road when the vehicle left the road for unknown reasons, crossed into a grassy median, and struck Longaberger. Carranza Castellon did not stop.

Gaithersburg City Police found the CR-V with front-end damage near the scene about six and a half hours later. Detectives with the Montgomery County Department of Police Collision Reconstruction Unit identified Carranza Castellon as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant the same day.

He was arrested the following morning as he attempted to board a flight to Honduras. Carranza Castellon is being held in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and is awaiting extradition to Maryland.
