A Baltimore County police officer was shot Sunday morning while responding to a suspicious person call along a trail off Milford Mill Road in Pikesville, according to the Baltimore County Police Department.

What happened: Officers from the Pikesville Precinct were sent to the trail at about 8:50 a.m. for a report of a suspicious person and indecent exposure. When they arrived, a person opened fire on them. Officers returned fire. One officer was struck during the exchange.

What we know: The officer was taken to Shock Trauma, the University of Maryland Medical Center’s trauma unit in Baltimore. The officer was conscious and being treated as of 2:40 p.m. The officer has been with the department for about a year and a half.

The person who fired on officers was also taken to Shock Trauma. A bystander was injured during the shooting and taken to an area hospital. The department did not identify any of the three people or describe the extent of their injuries.

What’s still unknown: The department had not released the officer’s name, the bystander’s name, or the name of the person who fired on officers. The condition of the subject and the bystander had not been confirmed. It was not clear whether the subject was in custody.

The scene: The shooting happened in the 900 block of Milford Mill Road. The Pikesville Precinct, known as Precinct 4, covers a large area of northwestern Baltimore County that includes Pikesville, Owings Mills, and surrounding communities.

Baltimore County Police held a news conference at 1:15 p.m. at Shock Trauma, located at Penn and West Lombard streets in Baltimore. No additional details from that news conference were included in the department’s statement.
