Four people died in crashes on Maryland roads from Aug. 17 to 23. As students return to school, officials advised motorists to watch for children.
What’s Happening: The state recorded 262 roadway deaths this year as of Monday. At the same point in 2025, Maryland had recorded 307 deaths. The latest statewide numbers are preliminary and may change.
By the Numbers:
- Six drivers, three passengers, three pedestrians and eight motorcyclists have died in August. No bicyclist deaths were reported.
- This year’s totals through Monday include 116 drivers, 37 passengers, 50 pedestrians, six bicyclists and 53 motorcyclists.
- The listed 2025 totals include 234 drivers, 83 passengers, 109 pedestrians, 10 bicyclists and 49 motorcyclists.
What’s Important: The Maryland Department of Transportation and Maryland State Police urged drivers to slow down and travel safely during the summer. Motorists should check twice before turning or changing lanes because motorcycles can be difficult to see in blind spots.
The Rules: Motorists must stop for school buses showing flashing red lights. The rule does not apply to drivers traveling in the opposite direction on a road separated by a physical median. Drivers also must change lanes for vehicles with flashing lights or slow down if they cannot safely move over.
How This Affects Real People: Drivers were advised to obey speed limits, avoid phones and other distractions, wear seat belts and never drive after using alcohol or drugs. Vehicles should be kept in good working condition. After a flat tire, drivers should move to a safe place if possible, turn on their hazard lights and call for roadside help when needed.
