A 4-year-old girl is dead in Pocomoke City, and the community that spent Sunday morning desperately searching for her spent Sunday evening mourning her loss.
The child was reported missing shortly before 11 a.m. in the area of Clarke Avenue and Laurel Street. She was last seen wearing pajamas, her hair pulled back in a ponytail. Officers from the Pocomoke City Police Department and deputies from the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office fanned out to find her.
They did. But it was too late.
Despite efforts by law enforcement and emergency medical personnel to save her, the little girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
By Sunday evening, Pocomoke City residents gathered at Cypress Park for a vigil, standing together in grief for a child, a family, and a community shaken to its core.
“Today, our hearts are broken,” the Pocomoke City Police Department said in a statement. “There are simply no words that can ease the pain of a loss like this.”
The department extended condolences to the child’s family and thanked the officers, firefighters, paramedics, public works employees, volunteers, and neighbors who responded to the search.
The Worcester County Sheriff’s Office is leading the death investigation. No additional details about the circumstances of the child’s death have been released.
What remains is a community in mourning, and a family facing the unimaginable.
