A 6-foot, 200-pound emu named Bonnie has gone rogue in northern Calvert County, and local animal control officers are now in the business of emu retrieval — armed, reportedly, with temporary fencing and snacks.
What’s Happening: Bonnie has been spotted roaming the Owings and Chesapeake Beach areas. The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to admire her from a distance, which is genuinely good advice given that an emu’s kick can cause serious injury. She is large. She is fast. She is not your friend right now.
What’s Important: Animal Control officers are attempting to contain Bonnie near fenced or enclosed areas using temporary fencing. The snack strategy has not been independently confirmed as effective, but it is the plan.
