Two foxes in Baltimore’s Roland Park neighborhood have tested positive for rabies, and health officials say up to five more infected animals may still be in the area.

What’s happening: The Baltimore City Health Department confirmed the two cases June 9. One fox had direct contact with humans. The second had no reported human exposure. A third person was later identified as a potential exposure to the same fox found on the 4400 block of Linkwood Road.

Where they were found: One fox was picked up near the intersection of Overhill Road and Meadow Lane. The other was found near the 4400 block of Linkwood Road. Both locations border Stoney Run Park.

What officials are warning: Animal Control believes the foxes came from the same den and that as many as five additional foxes may still be in the area. Health Department officers canvassed the area the evening of June 9.

What residents should do: The Health Department is urging residents near Stoney Run Park to check their pets for bite wounds. Any animal with suspicious injuries should be seen by a veterinarian immediately. Pets should be current on rabies vaccinations.

How this affects real people: Rabies is fatal if left untreated in humans. Anyone who handled a fox in Roland Park or whose pet had contact with a fox should contact the Health Department immediately.
