A three-story home at 125 Walnut Lane in Elkton was engulfed in flames early Saturday, hours after firefighters put out a small electrical-system fire there. The fire displaced four residents.
What Happened: A resident called emergency services at 9:08 p.m. Friday after finding smoke in the attic. Firefighters found a small, smoldering fire involving the home’s electrical system, brought it under control, shut off the power and later left the scene.
The Second Fire: A passerby called emergency services at 4:55 a.m. Saturday and reported the same home fully engulfed. Singerly Fire Company of Elkton led the one-alarm response, which involved 40 firefighters and took one hour to control.
What’s Confirmed: No injuries or deaths were reported. The estimated property loss was $400,000.
The Investigation: Investigators are still working to determine where the second fire began and what caused it. They could not rule out a link between the first electrical issue and the later fire.
Fire Protection: The home had no fire alarm or sprinkler system. Its smoke alarm status was unknown.
