Replacement ballots have been mailed to voters in all 23 Maryland counties and Baltimore City ahead of the original May 29 deadline, the Maryland State Board of Elections announced.

What’s Happening: Election officials mailed replacement ballots in two waves. The first went to voters in Anne Arundel, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Queen Anne’s, and Washington counties. The second wave covered Baltimore City and Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Dorchester, Garrett, Kent, Prince George’s, St. Mary’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester counties.

What’s Important: Voters who receive a replacement ballot should discard the original ballot and return only the replacement. Instructions are included in each replacement ballot packet.

How to Return Your Ballot: Voters can return replacement ballots through any of the following options, subject to applicable deadlines:

  • Ballot drop boxes.
  • Early voting centers.
  • Election Day polling places.
  • Local boards of elections offices.
  • Mail.

What Comes Next: State law requires local boards of elections to begin canvassing, or officially counting, mail-in ballots June 1. That process continues through the first day of early voting. Local boards are currently organizing previously returned ballots and collecting ballots from drop boxes as replacement ballots arrive.

What’s Confirmed: State Administrator Jared DeMarinis told county officials last week that Maryland’s election system includes safeguards that prevent duplicate voting and ensure only one ballot counts per voter.
