A routine traffic stop in Severn Monday evening ended with two Annapolis residents facing drug and weapons charges after police found a handgun, cocaine, marijuana, and cash inside their vehicle.
What happened: Anne Arundel County Police pulled over a 2015 Ford Explorer around 7:25 p.m. Monday at Pioneer Drive and Richfield Drive. A police K-9 alerted officers to the vehicle, leading to a search.
What police found: Inside the vehicle, officers seized:
- A Glock handgun
- 10.93 grams of suspected cocaine
- 1,770 grams (about 2.58 pounds) of suspected marijuana
- $7,105 in cash
- A digital scale and packaging baggies
Who was arrested: 21-year-old Omar Shalabi and 21-year-old Mariah Jaidyn Williams, both of Annapolis, were arrested and charged. Specific charges were not listed in the police report.
Catch up quick: The stop was made by the Western District Strategic Patrol Team, a unit that conducts targeted enforcement operations in the western part of Anne Arundel County. The team stopped the vehicle for an unspecified traffic violation before the K-9 search led to the discovery of the weapons and drugs.
Under Maryland law, possession of a firearm alongside controlled dangerous substances can result in enhanced criminal penalties. Marijuana in quantities consistent with distribution, rather than personal use, also carries more serious charges than simple possession.
Both Shalabi and Williams are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
