Maryland is starting the week in a deep freeze, and tonight is set to be the coldest night of the season.

What’s Happening: Clouds and bitter cold will rule the start of the week across Maryland, with only a small chance for light snow today in southern areas as a storm passes to the south.

A push of Arctic air will drop temperatures into the teens tonight, with a slow, brief warm-up by midweek before more possible wintry weather late in the week.

Why It Matters To You: If you have to drive, walk, or work outside, you will face very cold air over the next couple of days. You may also want to protect pets, plants, and pipes from freezing temperatures tonight.

Today (Monday): Clouds will hang around most of the day, and it will feel raw and cold.

High near 32 degrees, with a light to moderate northeast wind that could gust up to 25 miles per hour and make it feel even colder.

There is a slight chance of light snow or flurries, mainly across southern parts of the state as a storm system slides by to the south. Most areas are not expected to see any travel problems from this.

Tonight: Skies will start out cloudy, then slowly clear overnight.

Temperatures will drop sharply, with lows near 18 degrees. Winds will relax and become light or calm, but the air will still be very cold for anyone out late or early Tuesday.

Tuesday: Sun and clouds will mix, and it will stay cold but not as harsh as Monday. The high will reach around 37 degrees, still below normal for this time of year.

Tuesday Night: Clouds will increase again, and temperatures will not be as cold as Monday night. Lows will be near 29 degrees.

Wednesday: A brief warm-up arrives midweek, along with a chance for some rain. Skies will stay mostly cloudy, and highs are expected to climb to around 48 degrees. Any precipitation on Wednesday is expected to fall as rain with current temperatures.

Wednesday Night: Skies will turn partly cloudy, with a low near 33 degrees.

Thursday: Dry weather returns, with a mix of sun and clouds. The high will be around 42 degrees.

Thursday Night: Clouds increase again, with a low near 26 degrees.

Friday: Skies will be partly sunny, and it will stay cool. The high will be near 42 degrees.

Friday Night And The Weekend: Another system may bring a mix of rain and snow to parts of Maryland Friday night. Forecasters say there is still a lot of uncertainty about how this system will track and what type of precipitation will fall where.

Friday night will be mostly cloudy, with a low near 24 degrees and a chance of rain and snow.

The weekend looks dry but cold:

Saturday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 34 degrees and a low near 19 degrees.

Sunday: Partly cloudy, with a high near 32 degrees.

What’s Next: Forecasters are watching the late-week system closely. Details on timing, amounts, and the mix of rain and snow are still unclear. For now, expect dry but colder weather for Saturday and Sunday.
