A winter storm will bring snow and freezing rain to parts of Maryland starting Friday afternoon.
What’s Happening: The National Weather Service issued Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories on Christmas Day. The storm will hit the region Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.
What’s Important: Northern parts of Delmarva, including Wilmington, will get a coating to 2 inches of snow starting Friday afternoon. That snow will change to freezing rain Friday evening into Friday night. Up to 0.10 inches of ice could build up.
How This Affects Real People: Roads and sidewalks that haven’t been treated could get slippery and make travel dangerous. The change to freezing rain happens for areas near and northwest of I-95 and south of I-75 in Pennsylvania.
The Timeline: Snow starts Friday afternoon, moving from west to east. Friday evening and overnight, the snow will mix with sleet and freezing rain for areas near and northwest of Interstate 95. Most of Delmarva will see the precipitation change to rain or a mix during that time.
The Big Picture: The storm will bring widespread precipitation to the region Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Southern New Jersey into Delmarva will see a coating up to an inch as the mix of precipitation and rain keeps totals low. Areas farther north near and north of I-80 in eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey will see the most snow, with 5 to 8 inches and some spots getting up to 10 inches.
