A winter weather advisory goes into effect tonight across Maryland, DC, and northern Virginia as freezing rain creates hazardous road conditions.

What’s Happening: The National Weather Service issued the advisory for 7 p.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday. Light freezing rain and drizzle will coat roads, sidewalks, and bridges with a thin layer of ice.

What’s Important: Roads will be extremely slippery tonight and into early Saturday morning. Any snow that melted today will refreeze as temperatures drop into the 20s, making conditions even more treacherous.

Where: The advisory covers Washington DC, central and northern Maryland including Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Prince Georges, Charles, St. Marys, Calvert, Montgomery, Howard, and southern Harford counties. In Virginia, it includes Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Culpeper, Orange, and Fauquier counties.

What To Do: Drive slowly and leave extra space between cars. Fog will also reduce visibility in some areas. Call 511 for current road conditions in your state.
