Holiday shopping is here, but thieves are waiting to steal your money through fake websites and bad ads. You need to know the red flags before you click “buy.”
What’s Happening: The Better Business Bureau is warning shoppers to stay alert as they hunt for deals online. Fake websites often look just like the real ones to trick you into handing over your credit card info.
What’s Important: You should always look for a lock icon and “HTTPS” at the start of a website address before paying. If a store does not list contact information, that is a major warning sign that it might not be real.
Be A Savvy Shopper: Read the return policy closely because some items cannot be sent back at all. Even if you can return a gift, some companies charge restocking fees that reduce your refund.
The Big Picture: Not every advertisement you see is trustworthy. The Better Business Bureau created a program called AdTruth to teach people how to spot bad ads and report them before they cause financial harm.
