Drivers across Maryland will share the road with school buses again Monday as students return to class. The road design determines whether traffic in the opposite direction must stop for a bus.
When to stop: Drivers traveling in both directions must stop when a school bus flashes its red lights on a two-lane road, a two-lane road with a center turn lane or a multi-lane road without a median.
The divided-road exception: On a divided highway with a dirt, grass or barrier median, drivers behind the bus must stop. Drivers going the other way do not have to stop but should use caution.
What this means for you: School bus cameras often record drivers who fail to stop. A violation can bring a hefty fine of up to $1,000.
