The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents and businesses about a scam involving fake payment emails.

What’s Happening: Scammers are sending fraudulent emails that appear to come from legitimate companies. The emails include fake payment instructions, and victims send money to a third party without realizing it. The fraud is often discovered days later.

What’s Important: The scam targets people who are already conducting real business transactions. The fake emails are designed to look like they come from actual companies the victims work with.

How to Protect Yourself: The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to review payment instructions carefully before sending money. Anyone who believes they have been scammed should contact their bank immediately and report it to the Sheriff’s Office at 301-475-8008 or 911 in an emergency.
