Overall crime in Silver Spring dropped 8 percent in 2025 as Montgomery County police expanded patrols and worked more closely with businesses and community groups.
What’s Happening: Gun assaults fell 53 percent, carjackings dropped 35 percent, and auto part thefts decreased 34 percent. Auto theft fell 16 percent, robbery dropped 9.6 percent, and weapons discharges declined 18 percent. Homicides remained at nine, the same as 2024.
What’s Important: Police increased patrols in the central business district and launched a holiday retail task force with loss prevention staff and businesses including Ellsworth Place. Officers also connected unhoused residents with county health services and coordinated with Metro Transit Police around transit stations.
What Changed: Third District Commander Jason Cokinos created the holiday retail task force to prevent theft in Downtown Silver Spring shopping areas during the busy season. The task force brought together police officers, loss prevention personnel and local businesses.
