A Bowie man was indicted on assault charges after prosecutors say he strangled his romantic partner until she lost consciousness in front of their young child.
What’s Happening: Tyrell West, 30, was indicted February 2 on one count each of strangulation, threats to do bodily harm and simple assault. The charges stem from a November 26 incident in Washington, D.C.
What’s Important: According to the indictment, West threatened to assault the victim, then punched her in the face and strangled her while their young child was present. The victim lost consciousness during the assault, then fled to a neighbor’s apartment and called 911.
The Charges: Strangulation is a felony in D.C. that carries enhanced penalties compared to simple assault. The charge applies when someone intentionally impedes another person’s breathing or blood circulation by applying pressure to the throat or neck.
