A Sykesville man was arrested Friday night after two people were shot outside a restaurant in Eldersburg, Maryland State Police said.

What’s Happening: Matthew Tyler Hanks, 52, was taken into custody at the scene after troopers responded to a reported shooting at a restaurant on the unit block of Liberty Road around 9:30 p.m. on April 24. He faces two counts of first-degree assault and related charges.

What’s Important: The two victims, Brooks Sandoval, 60, of Hampstead, and David Hopwood, 50, of Sykesville, were both taken to a trauma center for treatment. Police recovered the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting.

What We Know: The shooting happened outside, behind the restaurant, following an altercation between the three men. Police believe all three knew each other before the incident. Hanks was arrested without incident and is being held at the Carroll County Detention Center.

What’s Still Unknown: The condition of the two victims has not been released. The nature of the altercation has not been disclosed.

Police say there is no threat to the public.
