Four people were injured Friday afternoon when a school bus and two cars crashed on a major Southern Maryland road during dangerous winter weather.

What’s Happening: The collision happened around 4 p.m. on Three Notch Road near Park Pines Drive and Kessler Court in Lexington Park. Bus 222 was carrying two children, a driver, and an aide when it collided with a Nissan and a Toyota sedan.

What’s Important: All four people on the school bus were checked by medics at the scene but did not need to go to the hospital. Four people from the two cars — two from each vehicle — were taken to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Between the Lines: The crash happened during a winter weather advisory for Southern Maryland, with icy conditions expected to continue through Saturday. Three Notch Road was completely shut down for more than an hour while emergency crews helped the injured and cleared the wreckage. The road reopened around 5:45 p.m.

What’s Next: Police are investigating what caused the crash. Officials warn drivers to expect hazardous road conditions Friday night and Saturday morning as temperatures drop into the 20s, causing wet roads to refreeze and creating icy patches.
