A winter storm is increasingly likely to bring heavy snow to Maryland beginning Friday night and lasting through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

What’s Happening: The National Weather Service issued a key message Wednesday morning warning of an impactful winter storm across parts of the southern Mid-Atlantic this weekend. Confidence is increasing for heavy snow across much of the Carolinas and parts of southern Virginia beginning as early as Friday night.

What’s Important: The storm system is likely to produce gusty winds that could reduce visibility and create difficult travel conditions. Along the Mid-Atlantic coast, increasing onshore winds coincident with astronomical high tides may lead to periods of coastal flooding and dangerous surf this weekend.

What’s Still Unknown: Several factors for this potential winter storm remain uncertain and forecast changes are anticipated as the system draws closer. The National Weather Service said confidence in impacts associated with snowfall remains lower to the north along the East Coast and into New England at the moment.
