A 30-year-old Ridgely man died Saturday afternoon when a box truck crossed the center line on Maryland Route 480 in Caroline County, forcing his vehicle onto the shoulder where the crash occurred.
Joseph Dsouza was driving a 2017 Kia Sorento south on Route 480 north of Eveland Road around 2 p.m. Saturday when an Isuzu box truck traveling north crossed into the southbound lane. Investigators believe Dsouza tried to avoid a head-on collision by moving onto the shoulder, where the crash happened. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Who was involved: A 50-year-old passenger from Kuwait was in Dsouza’s vehicle and was flown to a trauma center by Maryland State Police helicopter. A 50-year-old man from Greensboro was driving the box truck and was taken to a local hospital.
What’s still unknown: The cause of the crash has not been determined. State Police said impairment may have been a factor.
Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation, and troopers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division conducted a post-crash inspection of the truck.
