Maryland State Police are investigating after a 36-year-old inmate died at a state prison in Hagerstown.
What’s Happening: The inmate, identified as Wenhui Sun, was housed at the Maryland Correctional and Training Center when the incident occurred. He was pronounced dead by emergency medical services at the jail.
- Two other inmates have been identified as suspects.
- Their names have not been released because charges have not yet been filed.
What’s Important: Investigators say Sun was involved in an altercation with the two other inmates before he was taken to the prison’s medical unit, where he was pronounced dead. The case is still under investigation.
The Timeline: Around 3 p.m. on December 16, investigators with the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit notified Maryland State Police about the inmate’s death.
What Authorities Are Doing: Members of the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to the prison, along with crime scene technicians from the Forensic Sciences Division, to collect evidence. The completed investigation will be reviewed by the Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office.
