A gun brought to school by a student fired inside a classroom at Freetown Elementary School in Glen Burnie on Wednesday morning, injuring the student who brought it.

What’s Happening: Officers responded to the school at 7904 Freetown Road at 8:25 a.m. after a handgun went off inside a classroom. The student carrying the weapon was hurt when the gun fired. The teacher grabbed the weapon, helped the student, and told administrators.

What’s Important: Other students were in the classroom when the gun went off, but none were hurt. The injured student was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. Once the weapon was secured, there was no further threat.

What Detectives Know: The child appears to have taken the weapon from his home. Northern District detectives are investigating what led to the gun firing.

The school is providing additional student support services. Free gun locks are available to all Anne Arundel County residents through a partnership between the Gun Violence Intervention Team, local libraries, and community organizations.
