Anne Arundel County Office of Emergency Management released winter storm vehicle preparation and emergency guidance as a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect.

What’s Happening: The county office posted vehicle safety recommendations and emergency supply lists covering vehicle maintenance checks and items to carry during winter weather.

What’s Important: The office recommends checking headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers, and interior lights. Windshield wiper reservoirs should be filled with winter fluid with de-icer. Cooling systems should have enough coolant that meets manufacturer specifications and be checked for leaks. Old coolant should be tested, drained, or replaced.

Emergency Supplies to Carry: Drivers should keep a snow shovel, broom, ice scraper, and abrasive material such as sand or kitty litter in their vehicle. Jumper cables, a flashlight, warning devices including flares and emergency markers, a first aid kit with a tourniquet, blankets, a cell phone and charger, water, food, and necessary medicine should be on hand.

If Stopped or Stalled: Drivers should stay with their car and avoid overexertion. Bright markers should be placed on the antenna or windows with the interior dome light kept on. The exhaust pipe must be clear of snow. The car should run only sporadically to stay warm, not for long periods with windows up or in an enclosed space to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
