Anne Arundel County leaders want to give property owners more time to clear snow and ice from sidewalks.

What’s Happening: The County Council is considering a new rule that would extend the deadline for clearing sidewalks after winter storms. Right now, property owners have just six hours to clear their sidewalks.

What’s Important: Under the proposed changes, owners would have 24 hours to clear sidewalks if less than three inches of snow falls. They would get 48 hours if three inches or more falls.

Between the Lines: The proposal makes several other changes. It drops the criminal penalty for not clearing sidewalks and makes it a civil offense instead. Fines would be up to $50 for homes and up to $125 for businesses. The age exemption would also change from 55 to 70 years old.

Catch Up Quick: The County Council has held multiple public hearings since October. Another hearing is scheduled for December 1.

The Sources: Anne Arundel County Council proposed ordinance.
